  1. It is important to remember that Australia is roughly the same size as the continental USA, and just as you can have huge variations in the USA in mid-May, the same applies in Australia. May is the last month of Autumn in Australia, so think about what the last month of Autumn is like in the USA.  The coastal areas of the Eastern mainland states. south-eastern South Australia,  south-western West Australia, and all of Tasmania are becoming cooler. The northern coastal areas are entering the "wet season", the interior is experiencing 'some' rain, but it is still mostly dry.  I know this looks like a bit of a smorgasbord, but that is the way it is in Australia because it has such huge variations.

  2. It will be autum.  At the moment in South East Queensland, it has been raining at least once every week, (if not more)

  3. The trick is to dress like onion in layers, so you could take your layers if it's too hot or put on more if it gets chilly :-).

Australia is a country and also a whole continent, here are some of the average temperature around May for each states (depending on where you're going):

    - New South Wales (east coast of Australia with Sydney being its major capital city)  -> average May temperature 11-19C. In the past, in May the average rain day is 12 days with 121mm rain.

    - Victoria (east coast of Australia with Melbourne being its major capital city) -> Average May temperature 8-17C. In the past, in May the average rain day is 14 days with 58mm. Melbourne's in the middle of draught but expect 4 seasons in one day which means when  you leave the house might be sunny but in the middle of the day might be pouring raining.

    - Tasmania (south east cost of Australia in an island with Hobart being its major capital city) -> Average May temperature 7-14C. Can be a bit chilly down in Tasmania. Average rainy days is 14 days with 49 mm of rainfall.

    - Australian Capital Territory (east coast of Australia in between Melbourne and Sydney with Canberra being its major capital city) -> Average May temperature 3-15C. Canberra is in between hills, temperature can be really cold. Average rainy days 9 days with average rainfall of 49 mm

    - South Australia (South of Australia with Adelaide being its major capital city) -> Average May temperature 12-22C. Average rainy days of 14 days with 59mm rainfall.

    - Queensland (north east coast of Australia with Brisbane being its major capital city, other important cities would be Cairns). Queensland is a huge state, so I shall give you the 2 cities averages as well.

Brisbane -> Average May temperature is 13-23C, Rainy days of 10 days with average rainfall of 74mm. There'll be lots of sun still despites the temperature being a bit chilly around this part of the year.

Cairns (tropical weather) -> Average May temperature is 20-27C, average rainy days 14 days and average rainfall of 98mm.

    - Northern Territory (North of Australia with Darwin being its major capital city). Again, other than Darwin being the city, there's also another part of Northern Territory that's worth considering which is Alice Spring.

Darwin -> Average May temperature 23-33C, average rainy days 1 day and rainfall of 14mm

Alice Spring -> Aveverage May temperature 8-23C, average rainy days 3 days with average rainfall 19 mm

    - Western Austaralia (west coast of Australia with Perth being its major capital city). Please also consider Broome.

Perth -> Average May temperature 12-21C, average rainy days 14 days with average rainfall of 123 mm

Broome (North of Perth, kinda in the middle of the dessert part of Australia)-> Average May temperature 18-31C, Average rainy days 3 days and average rainfall of 31mm.

    Hope this helps :-)

  4. im in nsw, it has been quite chilly recently. The weather varies i must admit, one day its sunny, the next its pouring. This week is said to have a great amount of rain and will continue for the whole season.

  5. i live in victoria. and yes i think it would probably be very cold and rainy.

  6. I am from Sydney.

Generally this time of year it starts to get cooler and generally drier. The days should be fairly clear and sunny and low 20deg Celsius.

But this isn't the case this year. It has been quite wet and cool due to the end of El Nino.
