Question:

How is this algebra question done?

Im getting the hang of it but this one for some reason has me confused. I think its because I dont know if the second number is an integer or if its a subtraction sign.

Question:

(-5)(-2) -12

The answer is supposed to be -2.

But I see it as (- 5x- - 2)= - 10. THEN -10 - 12 = 2. NOT -2.

I dont think its a -12. I think there minusing 12.

Even so if they were doing that it would be - 10 + - 12 = - 22. And you always add when the symbols are the same. So thats wrong.

Please explain why the answer is the way it is.

  1. -5 multiplied by -2 is 10. If you subtract twelve from ten, you get -2. Generally, when there are two numbers in parenthesis next to each other, it means that they are being multiplied, hence why I multiplied -5 and -2. Hope this helps. :)

  2. multiply first then subtract or add and parenthesis means multiply

  3. (-5)(-2) -12

    10-12=

    -2

Go left to right (a negative times a negative = a positive) and always do multiplication before add/subraction.

  4. negative 5 times negative 2 is positive 10. 10 minus 12 is negative 2.

    -5 x -2 = 10,    10 - 12 = -2

  5. The -5 and the -2 are in parenthesis next to each other so they are multiplied first. A negative times a negative is a positive so -5 times -2 equals 10. Then you subtract 12 . 10 - 12 equals -2. You have to remember order of operations which is remembered with PEMDAS

    P-Parenthesis

    E- Exponents

M/D- Multiplication and division in order from left to right

A/S/- Addition and subtraction in order from left to right

You don't really need to add a variable if there is none to start with also because this is an expression, not an equation.

  6. the negatives cancel

    -5 x -2 is like 5 x 2

    10 - 12 = -2

  7. becuase when you times to negative numbers, it automatically becomes a positve.

    so -5 x -2 = 10

    10 - -12 = -2

    walla!

  8. -5 x -2 = +10

    so

    (-5)(-2) -12

    +10 - 12 = -2

  9. ne gative into negative gives positive.... ur basics are not clear it seems

with that rule v can solve this question

    (-5)(-2) means -5 * -2 = 10

further 12 is substracted from 10 so the answer is -2

    got it

  10. well you have to multiply -5 and -2 since negative X negative is positive the answer is 10

then you subtract it 10-12= -2

  11. (-5)(-2)-12 (subtract 12 from -5 times -2)

    10-12

    -2

  12. -5 times -2 is +10.  Remember that when a negative is multiplied by another negative, it turns positive.  10 - 12 = -2.

    Remember...

    + x + = +

    + x - = -

    - x + = -

    - x - = -

    Hope this helps!
