Question:

How is this ethical in a school?

The high school my niece attends has seven periods in a day. Class change is only three minutes long and in that time they have a far way to walk from class to class. Now if a student is late for class they have to stay after school for 5 minutes. If a student has to use the restroom during class, they have to stay after school for 10 minutes. So they are basically telling the children they can not use the bathroom during school which is 7 and a half hours long. How is that ethical to not allow the children to relive themselves for a whole 7 and a half hours?

  1. It isn't.  The breaks between classes are far too short; and denial of basic sanitation is not even permitted with prisoners of war.  (If not that it would get them in even more trouble, I'd suggest peeing in designated corners as a form or protest.)  The bathroom policy is grounds for a lawsuit on public health principles alone.

  2. this is normal for high schools...

  3. It's not.. my high school has a 6-7 min. passing period.. and in relieving cases, I get through the classroom door with.. maybe a minute or so to spare.. But with that, I'm already sitting in my seat, ready to go, not receiving a tardy, by the time the bell rings..

What I would like to ask though is, .. what are the bathroom policies at your niece's school? Weigh it out, and see if it's legitimate... otherwise.. I'd say the whole, 3min. passing period (class change) is clearly UNETHICAL.

  4. Wow thats true u should bring this to the attention of local news no way can a student be punished for needing to use the restroom in my school we can leave during class if the teacher denies us and still not be punished if u gotta go u gotta go...

  5. mom needs to call and talk to the principal. that is cruel. i'm quite sure there's a reason for it. everyone knows that kids will use any excuse to get out of class but that seems abusive.

most schools have a system in place, like having a certain number of times a student can leave the classroom each semester, etc.

and they don't literally have to go the entire school day without a bathroom break. that's part of what lunchtime is for. and if they have p.e.

  6. First, I assume there must be a lunch break sometime (or else that's really unethical!).  At my high school, we had three minutes between classes, and if a student needed to use the restroom, they generally asked the teacher at the beginning of the class.

I don't agree with a set "punishment" for needing to use the restroom.  Students, particularly girls, can develop bladder problems if they're constantly holding it in for so long.  Your niece shouldn't have to choose between either detention or peeing her pants if she needs to go to the bathroom!

  7. well basically the school is very strict. Sounds to me that the school wants student to have a high education. In this case, bathroom are not permitted because it disrupt the flow of teaching and the student will miss part of the lesson depending on how long he or she use the bathroom. I agree its not appropriate for school like this to have students  prohibited from using the bathroom and if so detention for 10 minutes is serve. However this school leaves earlier than most school since the period only last through 7th. my school leaves after 8th period and for the most part i never seem to use the bathroom ever since school starts. staying 10 minutes is not bad since education is being taken seriously. 3 minutes is enough time to switch class to class that is if the student don't chat with their friend in the hallway etc. i personally font see it as a bad thing but if you do then u should contact the school administrator.
