How is this fair?

Last year Rafa retired from his match against Monaco in Cincinnati trailing 6-7 1-4 with Monaco serving at 40-15 to go up 5-1. He was almost one game away from losing the match when he retired simply saying he was feeling weak and it was stupid to continue.

I love Rafa but that was way worse than what Nole did.

  1. It's not. But fanatics don't always think in terms of fairness when their idol or object of their affections is involved.

My guess is no matter what Djokovic does or how incredible his feat (he's won 3 of the 5 major tournaments this year on 3 different surfaces) fanatics will always make him out to be the villain for doing what their player was incapable of doing.

  2. he just had an injury then..

  3. It's not. The fed lovers/nole haters hate nole because they see him as a serious threat to fed's #1 ranking since he has an all court game. Just to make him look bad in any possible way, they like to pick on these stupid things. Nobody cares about howmuch davy retires. why? heck, he's lost each and every match he's ever played against fed. They love the presence of such people so that their player can continue on top.

  4. I suppose it's not fair, but you must remember that Nadal was quite injured then. His knees were in bad shape and in the second set he was getting bad cramps in his left arm. I watched that match. You have to take into account that he had a full schedule last year, and fatigue and injuries caught up with him after his exertions at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Remember how he struggled at the US Open because of his knees.

The same goes for some(not all) of Djokovic's retirements since Djokovic had one of the fullest schedules in 2007.

  5. I'd have to agree with you.  I think the difference is that Rafa has been around longer and therefore has gained more respect with his fans.  Nole has retired a few times now and whether for valid reasons or not, he will have to work at gaining some peoples respect again.  Not entirely fair but that's the way it is.

  6. A lost is a lost, doesn't matter if it one game away or ten games away. We are not out there competing so we just doesn't know how the players feel, we shouldn't condemn them for quitting, their health is more important than one match.
