I was reading some useless facts, and I saw this:

'Reno, Nevada is west of Los Angeles, California.'

Can someone please explain to me how this is possible?

  1. California is shaped kind of like a boot.  Nevada touches the bend where your ankle would be whereas L.A. is near the bottom of the foot.

  2. Simple, you go west from Los Angels and circumnavigate the globe and you will eventually arrive in Las Vegas.

  3. It's because of the way Nevada and California are shaped.   Reno is in the corner that comes down on the west side of Nevada which is where California starts to bend back toward the east.  LA is in the bottom of that bend and that's why Reno is is west of LA.

Here's a link of a map that will show you what I'm talking about: http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Reno+&...

The red star is where Reno is.

  4. Go west far enough ... ;)

  5. The world is a sphere, therefore, it goes around and meets up :)

Basically, imagine you have a globe, run your finger westwards from Reno, until you hit California. Ta da!
