  1. it is fantastic and very rewarding

  2. You need lots of patience and love. Reach out to them slowly. Most important, you must enjoy what you are doing.   :D

  3. To me it is very rewarding, working with autistic kids... I have also worked with behaviorally challenged kids.

  4. If you are talking about public schools in USA, it is HORRIBLE. I heard it's just as bad in UK

  5. I teach a class for special education students ages 5 to 8, and I love my job.  It is sometimes frustrating, often exhausting, but never, ever boring.  My students have a wide range of disabilities, including autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, ADHD, traumatic brain injury, and blindness, so it's a challenge to me and my teaching assistants to modify our materials and instructional techniques to suit the needs of each individual student.  Our kids are learning everything from toileting skills to reading, writing, and math.  It's exciting for us to see our students begin to learn the skills that will help them to become more independent.  I can't even begin to explain how much it moves us to hear little kids who couldn't talk at all a year ago begin to speak short and meaningful sentences, or to see a child get strong enough to move from a wheelchair to a walker.  And even though some of the children present behavioral challenges, they also give us a couple of good laughs every day.

I would suggest that you spend some time visiting special education classes, and if possible, either volunteering or working as an assistant in a class.  Make sure this is something you absolutely love before you decide to make a career of it, for your own sake as well as for the sake of the students.
