  1. Well, that's the Wiki answer, but kinda complicated, though olympichoney did a good job.

Basically an advertiser will set a target for an ad campaign. Let's say: they want to reach at least 25% of the available women 25-54 five times over the campaign.

Since the campaign is on mass media, many people who fall out of that target will also be reached (GRP-or gross rating points). So by multiplying the percentage of what the total campaign reached by the percentage of the target that makes up that total - you get the TRP.

So now you've got the complicated (but correct) answer - and one that's a little easier to understand.

If you're "into" numbers, being a researcher for a radio or TV station is a fun job 'cause this is the sort of stuff you do every day..

  2. A good explanation is found at wikipedia:

A Target Rating Point (TRP) is a measure of the purchased target rating points representing an estimate of the component of the target audience within the gross audience. Similar to GRP (short for Gross Rating Point) it is measured as the sum of ratings achieved by a specific media vehicle of the target audience reached by an advertisement. For example, if an advertisement appears more than once, reaching the entire gross audience, the TRP figure represents the sum of each individual GRP multiplied by the estimated target audience in the gross audience.

In the case of a TV advertisement that is aired 5 times reaching 50% of the gross audience with only 60% in the target audience, it would have 250 GRPs (= 5 x 50) -- ie, GRPs = reach x frequency - TRP in is this case should be 60% out of 250 GRPs = 150 TRPs - this is the rating point in the target, 60% of the gross rating.

Both of these metrics are critical components to determine the marketing effectiveness of a particular advertisement.
