    They took  Vietnam as their colony for 100 years.

    If you go to Dalat , a charming city near Saigon, people will address you in French.

    I recommend you the film Indochine.

For along time during the colonial period, all the book of higher learning ( medical, mathematic, philosophy...) were imported from France and in French.  That's why most educated Vietnamese over 60 years old speak French.  From the same period we learned to like the cafe's, bakeries, vacations in cooler climate.

  7. The French were there for about 100 years.  Much of Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) looks like Paris and New Orleans.  Red tile roofs everywhere.  Vietnamese people may ask you something in their language and if you don't understand, they will ask "Parlez-vous français ?
