Question:

How is volleyball scored?

When I played volleyball (many years ago) a team could only score if they were serving. I was watching Olympic volleyball and it didn't matter who was serving. Is it just high level volleyball that is scored this way, or has high school volleyball scoring changed too?

  1. Around Year 2000 the International Committee changed the rule to "rally scoring" in order to have better control over the time spent in volleyball games. It has been extended to US at all levels including middle school, high school, and NCAA games.

In rally scoring whenever the ball is in play, a score is to be expected, either the team that served the ball or the team that was receiving. Total of each game could be different, like NCAA was going by 30 (recently changed to 25), and all other games are 25 with deciding game played to 15.

Cap is enforced, under the cap there should be at least 2 points difference for a team to win the set.

  2. im in catholic school and play catholic youth organization(CYO)

and u can start playing in 3rd grade in 4th grade star playing rally scoring and u dont stop from there on out!

  3. High school volleyball has gone to Rally scoring too.  The games are now played the best 2 out of 3 to 25 points.  No matter who is serving you can still score.  This makes serves even more important.  If you miss your serve, you give your opponent a point.  This also means that it is much easier for big runs in points.  Hope this helps!

  4. in elementry school volleyball the scoring is not rally score with means you can only score a point on the serve.

but in middle school, high school, and club volleyball the scoring is rally scoring which means after every play one team score a point.

and the points go to 25 and you usually play best 2 of 3.
