  1. How Water Is Polluted

Fourteen billion pounds of garbage are dumped into the world's oceans each year!

Farmers - pesticides and fertilizers — Effects:  - lower reproduction rates and increased stress on fish, so are less healthy

Transportation  - ships cleaning ballasts - zebra mussels in the Great Lakes - ships emptying garbage and sewage - oil spills - cruise ships with large amounts of sewage

Fishermen -  batteries, tin cans, oil, gas, old tires fishing gear ("ghost nets", plastic, ring tabs, lobster traps, non-biodegradable materials in general, and  fish guts, —  Effects: bacteria are produced, which form a layer of slime on fish and plants. This results in decreased oxygen and increased disease.

Industries - pulp and paper - chemicals, acid rain

Pleasure Boaters and Recreation  - plastics,  bags, bottles, wrappers, sewage, beer cans, ring tabs, gas, oil etc.

    How Air Is Polluted:

    — urban areas: are transportation (predominantly automobiles) and fuel combustion in stationary sources (heating, cooling etc) – vehicles produce high levels of carbon monoxides (CO) and  are a major source of hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) – fuel combustion in stationary sources is the dominant source of sulfur dioxide (SO2) ie; smoke stacks

    — in the home:

    - air in some office buildings is 100 times more polluted than the air outside – poor ventilation, rest comes from mold and air conditioning systems, copying machines, cleaning fluids, , carpets, and paint etc

    — smog "

    - created by burning coal and oil that contain sulfur in power plants and industrial plants etc

    Noise Pollution

" Barking dogs, lawn mowers, leaf blowers, power saws, snow blowers, church bells, jackhammers, motorcycles, airplanes, car stereo systems, and traffic generally have combined to such a degree that noise induced irritation, annoyance, discomfort, and hearing impairment have become a significant public health issue, certainly enough of one to motivate a political response.
