I have heard that dehumidifiers distill water, how do they do that?

  1. Large scale water distillation take place in desalination plants to make drinking water.The water is heated  with the help of steam,then cooled in a condenser.

    Also there is another process called Reverse osmosis.

    But that is not distillation


  2. Dehumidifiers do NOT distill water.

    All they do is collect water that is in the air by freezing the water and then on its warm cycle letting it thaw out and drip in a collector tray.

    This water is full of all the muck in the air and can not be considered fit to drink or distilled.

    To get distilled water, you have to boil the water and then let it condense in a clean environment such as a glass tube running through cold water, out of the end of this tube comes distilled water which is pure.

    All the muck is then left in the original container.
