Question:

How is wrestling scripted?

I just wanted to know how they script the match. Do they practice the whole match together to make it right, or do they just do random moves and such and the predetermined winner just chooses when to end the match?

  1. It's not scripted,it's fake.

  2. I think that what you've described is pretty much how it works.  Before they hit the ring, they know who will win; however, there are a variety of moves/scenarios that can be carried out.  Depending on how much time is available and other factors, that's how the match comes together.

  3. It's a little bit of both.  Big spots, finishes, and uncommon moves may be talked over between the two (or more) superstars prior to their match, but most of what goes on in the ring is very impromptu.  I'm not positive, but I've heard that wrestlers do go through a preliminary match off camera to get a feel for one another, but, once again, I don't know how much truth there is to that, other than perhaps dark matches.  Not every move is planned.  Most moves are called on the fly, or discussed during the match while a rest hold (like a sleeper, camel clutch, or any other move that leaves you immobile and near your opponent's ear) is administered.  Sometimes you can even hear them call a move in the ring before it happens.  To give you a better idea about this, I've posted a link to a botchamania below where towards the end, there's a montage of moves CLEARLY being called before they happen.  But most of what goes down in the ring depends a lot on chemistry.

  4. Many times, the wrestlers work with trainers and go through a "rehearsal" of the match before having the actual match.  They also give each other cues during the match to let each other know what move is coming next.  The referee also helps out by giving cues to the wrestlers.

  5. Several ways. First off, yes both wrestlers often practice the match a couple times, and even before the practice matches behind the scenes, they usually work a live dark match together to see if there's any chemistry there.

Second, the ref always has a microphone in his ear. Somebody backstage tells him what to do, and then he tells the wrestlers. You'll notice this if you watch for it.

Third, the wrestlers themselves will call out different moves to eachother, to make sure the timing is correct, this can also be noticed if you watch for it. This is especially true for the vets, guys like Shawn Michaels, who knows the ring inside and out.

The only time the match is *not* predetermined is if something goes wrong, and they have to go with a different ending than originally planned, and it often looks very sloppy, so you'll notice that also.

    I hope this helps.
