I've not played for at least three years, but back then the points awarded or lost are weighted in favour of the player with the lower rating.  I don't know if it's change in the meantime.

For example, if a 1600 player beats someone who is only 1200, he might only get a single point or two.

If the postions are reversed, he can expect to give up 40-ish points to the lower ranked player.

That's why people generally want to play opponents that are at least the same or very similar level than themselves.
