I am thinking about getting a boa constrictor but I am not sure how large of an enclosure I will need. I know that females can reach about 11 ft but I am looking for a male. I have never been able to get the same answer twice.I have a ball python and I keep her in a 40 gal tank. She is 5.5ft long so I understand the commitment and what goes into taking care of a large snake even though red tails can get much larger.

  1. cage size goes as follows :   (2/3 length of snake long)  x (1/3 length of snake deep) x (1/3 length of snake tall) for all terrestrial snakes( remember boas are not terrestrial but the formula works well for them , its still advisable to give them more space if your able to.) this is minimum.

  2. The rule here is “the bigger, the better.” Ideally, you should provide an enclosure at least 6’L X 2’W X 2’H. The idea is to provide your animal with enough room to stretch out, and for a temperature range within its environment.

  3. According to "The Boa Constrictor Handbook" by the very reputable Philippe de Vosjoli, a male boa can live its whole life in a cage with a floor space of 4 feet by 2 feet. He recommends 6 x 2 for females.

  4. i had 3 guyana redtail boas which were beautiful but each one had their own 75 gal. tank...the male was 14 ft., rosy the female was 12 ft., and slice (for the orange she displayed instead of pink) the other female was 11 ft.
