Question:

How likely am I to have twins?

My father is a fraternal twin and my boyfriend's mother is an identical twin. I heard it skips a generation. There are no other twins currently in either of our families. I'm so nervous that when I decide to have kids I will end up with twins first thing.

  1. You get your twin gene from your mother's side. It doesnt matter if your dad is a twin or your bf's mum is a twin.

I am not sure about skipping generation because my mum had twins and I am now pregnant with twins. I have 4 other twins in my dad's side.

The chances are very low and if it happens, its pure coincidence.

  2. Actually, your question is a valid one.  I answer it all the time.

Here's how it works...Fraternal twins happen when a woman releases two eggs (known as hyper-ovulation) that become fertalized by two separate sperm.  This type of twinning can happen to anyone, but increases in women as they get older (think 35 years or more) and with women who undergo fertility treatments, and yes, women who could have inherited the "hyper-ovulation" gene from ANY FEMALE, blood related relative on their mother or father's side.  Just like you could inherit your grandmother's red hair or your aunt's blue eyes.

The confusion that people have is when the male is the one with twins in the family and also the one trying to conceive twins.  In this case, there is NO hereditary bearing on chances because the male only provides sperm, while the woman is the one that has to ovulate two eggs (fraternal) or one egg that splits (identical).

Also, identical twins are not hereditary and happen randomly throughout the population.  And as far as the skipping a generation thing goes, there’s just not enough solid evidence to make it an exact science.

    Hope this helps!

  3. honey... you're not gonna have twins. all that stories are false. i mean, if my mom had a sister, my father too, and also my grandma, it doesn't mean I do ! right ?

    like, drop in reality. (:

  4. Its very likely.  Most times it does skip a generation but it doesnt mean that you wont have them.  talk to your doctor about the possiblities.  good luck hun
