Question:

How likely are they to let me do this on a New Zealand Air flight?

In a few weeks time I'm traveling from the UK to NZ. Its a veerrry long flight, with a few hours in transit at LA.

My aging laptop has a battery life of around 3hrs30, and while I won't be on it for the whole flight, I'm sure I'll want to use it a bit more than that in the 30+ hours I have to kill.

Unfortunately NZ Air don't offer in-seat power in economy class (when I've traveled with American Airlines they have it in all classes), but if I talked nicely to steward and there were some free seats, are they likely to let me into premium-economy/business class to use or charge my laptop?

  1. I would say very unlikely. First it's unlikely there will be open seats, secondly it's unlikely they will allow you to sit there when you didn't pay for it. They won't even let people use the lavatory in business in an "emergency".  It's more likely they would let you charge the battery somewhere on the plane like in the galley area but you won't be able to sit there.

Don't forget to bring your adaptor for the plug so you can charge your 'puter in LAX. US outlets are two prong (flat) or three prong (2 flat 1 round).  Australian outlets are again different from UK and US.

  2. You can try. American Airlines by the way is one of the worst airlines in the world. Many problems with that one; of course none of it has anything to do with laptops.
