Question:

How likely is it for a convertible to get stolen?

I've seen a lot of people leave their convertibles in parking lots unattended without the tops. Is this safe? Even with a soft top, is it really easy for it to be stolen?

  1. It is very easy to get into and steal items from the vehicle but with the newer cars you will not be able to just jump in and drive off due to the factory security systems, also the insurance will be alot higher...........................

  2. i think it would be easier to steal it with the top off than it would be with the top on because with the top on ur already in the car all u have do is just hotwire the car and ur in.

    JUST DONT TRY IT

  3. This is precisely why they are more expensive to insure.

  4. no its not safe

there are alot of car thefts around North America and maybe some can vandalize cars (like use keys to scratch the vehicle) or steal it drive it for fun

  5. Well, in my opinion, with the top on the car down it IS more easily stolen. But that's not always the case. I've actually heard more about cars that aren't convertibles being stolen. I'm not sure what it is, maybe there aren't many thieves that want a convertible because they want to hide their faces or something in the car??

    Hope that helps! =)

  6. new models are no less safe than hardtop cars, obviously its easier to steal the contents of the veichle (ie your phone or sat nav) but in terms  of actualy stealing the veichle there pretty much on a par

  7. I would think it makes it easier.  One guy is right though...the imobilizer would make it hard to do in the first place.  Basically need the key to start cars that have it.

  8. People may think that convertibles are very likely to get stolen because of their soft tops. In reality its not really that true. Yes drop tops are more likely to be stolen but its only around 1-5% (saw it off auto deal statistics), so its not really that significant. Vandalism is the real issue, not theft.

I have a hard top on my conv, but only because it looks a lil better. I park my car without the top, and I've never had problems (well someone once splashed their coffee in it but thats another story).

If you drive and park in a decent area you should be just as ok as non-convertible cars. Even if your car is a ferrari or something it should be just as ok (because everyone knows they have trackers). Oh yeah, to make yourself feel better you could always get a tracker, as they're pretty cheap these days.

  9. Back when cars had the old style safety/ sandwich glass, glass didn't fall out when it was broken, and it made a big mess if ya tried to get into the car, but, with a convertible, all ya had to do was rip the top, stick yer arm in there and unlock the door.

Now a days, there don't seem to be as many convertibles in use, so it isn't a problem.  And, folks want to limit damage to their canvas tops, so they leave them in the down position. There are cretins out there who think its a funny thing to cut a convertible top, just to get a laugh out of it!  They are of the same mentality of those who use something to scratch the whole side of a car, or bust the mirrors off with a ball-bat.  Yep--buy the kids shoes, send them to school, and they eat the books!

  10. not modern convertibles because they have something called an immobilization system which makes it almost impossible to hotwire. the stuff inside could be easily stolen but not the car itself

  11. i would most likely say yes to your question to have some one that stupided too do that i would  not do nothing like that

  12. It is definitely not safe. Those people have obviously not been robbed before. One day they will though and those tops will be up after that. Maybe they do not keep any valuables in the car.

  13. Five of my last ten cars have been convertibles and the only car to be stolen was not a convertible. I now drive a retractable hard top convertible. With today's anti theft devices it would be unusual for a car to actually be stolen by hot wiring, etc. Most cars that are stolen are the Japanese imports where the anti theft devices can be broken or jimmied.

  14. get an old geo metro convertible and nobody will want to steal that.

  15. I have seen convertibles with their tops down and I just wouldn't do that if I had one.  Some kids might come and sit in it and rip the leather/material, graffiti or vandalize it on the inside.

  16. If somebody wants it, they will take it, gone in 60 seconds, that really happens, convertibles are 30 seconds, doors already open.

  17. It makes it much easier to get into the driver's seat, that's for sure. I imagine most crooks spend the majority of their time just trying to get into a car. Assuming there isn't much of an alarm system in place...after that it's just a mess of wires, etc.

Doesn't leave you much cover to work in though, haha.

I'd be more worried about vandalism, personally.
