Hi,

How long does it take the water to get to the top of a tree (via its roots)? Or is this dependant on the type of tree it is? The tree I have in mind is a 6 metre high Ash.

Thanking those in advance of their reply

  1. they drink from thier roots and it is just absorbed within the tree itself. It never really reaches the top.

My Dad always taught us kids to  always  water a tree and or roses slowly for a longer period of time than you would normaly water them.

Lets say turn the water on to a tad past a trickle and leave for hours as to be absorbed slowly and not lets say drown the roots,,,

    make sense?

    Hope so.

    Good question.

  2. i have no idea but man im so curious as to why you would want to know this answer!!

  3. They drink it up pretty quickly..especially if it has been dry awhile...6 metres I would say no less than 20 minutes for it start to show on a withered leaf one..not long

  4. It's impossible to be specific,so many variables are involved. The type of tree affects the water uptake,a conifer or other evergreen absorbs water all the time.deciduous trees have a reduced flow during the dormant period after fall.

Soil composition plays a part,it's hard to absorb moisture from sandy ground as opposed to a swamp!

Then factor in the weather, water intake is greater in hot weather, with a drying wind than during a blizzard.

Good question, good luck with an answer!
