Question:

How long I'm allowed to keep my dual citizenship?

Am I able to keep my dual citizenship for life? I was born in Germany to an American mother and German father. I speak both English and German fluently, because I have lived an equal amount of time in each country. In two years I'm going to turn 18. Will I have to choose one nationality and give up the other when I turn 18?

I've asked both my father and my mother but they can't seem to be able to give me a straight answer.

  1. You can keep the dual citizenship. You may choose to renounce one but there is no reason to do so. In older times countries behind the Iron Curtain sometimes cancelled the citizenship of people who left the country illegally (i.e. escaped). This does not apply in your two good free countries.

But choose which passport you will apply for, you attract a lot of attention these days if you keep swapping passports when you travel, especially during the one trip. The German one might entitle you to EU citizenship, too, which is good for all of Europe,

  2. You do NOT have to choose. You can maintain dual citizenship.

  3. Under German law you have till you reach 23. At that time you must choose. If you do not renounce your US citizenship you will be stripped of your German citizenship. The US doesn't care if you have dual citizenship.
