Question:

How long after D&C do you have to wait to try and conceive again?

I have a D&C scheduled this Friday and will also be 10 weeks along this Friday. I have a blighted ovum that doesn't show any signs of removing itself, yet the sac did shrink and isn't growing. The sac measures 6 weeks and there isn't anything in it.

Anyways, my doctor says I should wait after two periods to try again. However, that seems like a long time. What is the danger in just waiting until after one? I have heard of some who never had a period and got pregnant. Why do you have to or should you wait?

  1. I had a d&c for a blighted ovum.  I was told by my DR to wait one period cycle.

  2. Remember you ovulate before you get a period. You may very well be prego and not have a period.

  3. Sorry for your loss hun, I had a miscarriage in March, however mine was natural so my doc's advice may have been different for that reason.  The first doc I seen said to wait 3 cycles before TTC (in my mind I was thinking like h**l I'm waiting THAT long),  then a week later I went to see my own doc for a follow up and he said to go ahead right away.  He told me alot of times they will say wait 3 cycles so if you do get pregnant it's easier to determine due dates and stuff.  I waited until I got my first period to make sure my body was back on track and away we went.  We are currently on cycle #3 and I'm in my 2ww 9dpo.

  4. I'm so sad that you're going through this :(

Wait and see how the D&C goes. If it's a nice, clean process, then ask the doctor who does the surgery whether you can start to try within a month. Sometimes, the D&C is like a 'spring clean' for your uterus and that helps to get you pregnant again quickly. But it will depend on the location of the blighted ovum and whether it affects the tubes etc. Once the process is complete, you should ask if you can try immediately.

Personally, I would wait a month for your body to readjust after surgery, but then once you've had a period again, you can probably try. Best of luck xoxoxoxox

  5. A friend of mine was told  to wait one full cycle, then she could try again.  Sure enough, the 2nd cycle after the miscarriage she got pregnant but turns out it was a blighted ovum and didnt find out until almost 3 months.  (a blighted ovum is when the fertilized egg implants, but only the half that is to be the support system survives, and the half that was to be a baby dies and is absorbed into the lining.  So her uterus, and the placenta were growing as if there were a baby, but there never was.)

Then of course after that another dr told her to wait at least 3 months, preferrably a year.

I know its a long time to wait, but I went through that with her, and I can promise it isnt something you want to have to go through twice.  Give yourself some time to grieve your loss, and really take care of your body so it is in tip top shape when its time to try again,

Best of luck and keep us posted.

  6. I hate to hear that you have to go through this, I couldn't even imagine how hard this is for you. I would definitely listen to the doctor on this. They know what they are doing, especially if it is the one that is doing the D & C. You want your body to fully recover from the d&c before getting pregnant again. You dont want to take any chances the second time around. Some people get pregnant right away after a d&c but I wouldn't suggest it. Give it at least 2 months for everything to get back on track. i would hate to have to see you go through this again. good luck and god bless!!
