  1. I agree w/ the previous poster...it depends why you are having a c-section.  I thought (and I'm by no means a medical expert) that you should wait until at least 40 weeks to deliver as that is what's best for the baby.  I had an emergency c-section, so I'm not sure about scheduling.  Good luck!!

  2. Don't let these nay sayers get to you.  I have had 3 c-secs.

First let me start by saying that my sister had refused a c-section with her second because of all the 'hype' about the dangers and her daughter was too big for her to deliver.  Finally after arguing with her they did the only other thing they could and dislocated her hips so she could birth her daughter.  Her girl is 22 and my sister still walks with a limp.

She was about your size.  I am 5'1" and weight has varied (weight doesn't matter when talking about size because it has to do with your bones in most cases)  With my first I was in labor with for 36 hrs, fully dilated and having hard labor.  They finally said there was no choice, I had to have a c-sec because they couldn't get him past my pelvic spines and he was in distress.  For the second son they offered to induce early to try for a VBAC.  Five weeks early and my second son still couldn't pass through my pelvic spines.  The doc later told me that I would have to deliver at the most a 5 lb child for it to fit.  I said 'wow, what did they do before c-sections'  he said 'In most cases the mother, child or both would die.'  I thought he was kidding but my father said that is how his sister died.  They were poor and she gave birth at home (this was in the 1940's) and she just couldn't get the baby out and they both died.

So this c**p about 'the baby is too big is c**p' well... is c**p.

To answer your question, I had my third son c-sec... this time I wasn't even gonna try, we planned the c-sec.  I actually set the date a few months in advance so family could make arrangements to be there.  I had the baby 10 days early.  I have to say though, I wish I would have let him bake a lil longer.  He was perfectly healthy, but it would have given him time to put a lil more fat on.  All my boys were over 8lbs.

BTW... if you wanted, you could ask that you go into labor naturally so that you can experience the water breaking and the onset of labor and the excitement, letting God pick the birthday, so to speak and they will most likely accomodate.  It will just be known that you need a c-section.  I was going to do that this time but it put me right over fourth of july and I was worried that was when I would go into labor and I would get stuck at the festivities and have my son at the firework show, lol. I also had a hernia surgery at the same time so it helped to get everyone coordinated.

Best wishes to you and your lil one!!  Don't fret, it will come soon enough whatever you choose to do.  All docs are different, I had one let me go 5 weeks early (with proper testing, btw-and I wouldn't advise it now) and another who was willing to let me go 10 days early.  But... this was also my 3rd pregnancy with two very healthy previous pregnancies.  Ask for whatever you want, the worst the doc can do is say no and you pick a different date!

Best of Luck!  Enjoy... they are so much fun!!!!

    Congrats on your lil one.

Edit:  I have to say also... why do people who have never experienced a c-sec always claim that it is being done for the convienence of the doc?  All three of mine - I had the docs undivided attention for over 2 hours.  It is major surgery.  The more they perform the more malpractice insurance they have to pay.  They can't pop in and out during labor and then be there for the pushing and out the door.  They have to be there for prep, delivery, closing and recovery.  Sorry, I think it is an insult to those of us who have had a c-sec.  This isn't the easy way out... I would much prefer the simplicity of vaginal birth than the delivery and very painful recovery not to mention the scarring of a c-sec.

I doubt your doc is pushing you into this for his convenience... if the doc is suggesting it, then you probably need it.

  3. i know you are very excited to have your baby but enjoy some sleep in these last few days!!! i had to have a c-section with my son on july 10 and wow i did not see that coming. it is hard recovery and thank the lord for help. they will more than likely schedule the c section anytime after you hit 39 weeks. so im guessing thursday or friday. good luck and congrats!

  4. The dilating happens while you are in labour (it is the process of giving birth) and the dropping usually only happens just before impending labour.

I am surprised that if you knew you were having a cesarean it hasn't been scheduled already because Doctors have to find room in their schedule, unless it is an emergency.

In your case they are probably waiting as long as possible to give your baby the best start, and I was supposed to be having a huge baby with my son and was recommended to have a cesarean, he turned out to be 8lb 5oz and I had him natural (so glad too), depending on how you and your Doctor have come to the conclusion that your baby is huge and for what reason (gestational diabetes for instance) or just by an ultrasound and measurements alone (which are wrong 33% of the time). I really don't know, unless your Doctor doesn't really want to give you a cesarean and is waiting to see what happens.

  5. I had my c-section scheduled for 38 weeks due to having an abdominal cerclage which is a little bit different of a situation than yours.  Normally they try to get as close to 39 weeks as possible.  I ended up having an emergency c-section at 34w6d.  My son spent 8 days in NICU, but he is fine now.  If you had your c-section tonight the chances of your child being in NICU are very slim much less a 2-3 month stay like someone mentioned, so please don't even think twice about worrying about that.  I also wanted to mention that there isn't anything wrong with having a c-section although you are going to run into people who will try to make you feel bad about it.  It doesn't matter how the baby is brought into the world as long as it is healthy and safe right?  Good luck to you!  That baby will be here before you know it!

  6. It probably depends why you are getting a c-section.  I am getting a c-section at 39.5 weeks.  They try to keep the babies inside for as long as possible, it's better that way.  It's unfortunate that they didn't give you a date sooner, so now you just have to wonder.  However, I try to think of it like if you were having a regular natural birth you wouldn't have a date yet either.  Good luck.  If you haven't already watched a c-section be done on you tube I recommend it.  It's scary to watch but amazing.

  7. Mine was scheduled 2 months in advance, how weird.  I have planned because my first was an emergency C, so....bah.

They never let you go past 40 weeks.  So at least you know that much.

They usually go NO earlier than 39 weeks, not even by a day.  Trust me, I tried. :)  It was 38w5d and they wouldnt do it.  UG!

    :)

But..it's safer to let baby bake in the oven as long as possible.

    GOOD LUCK!

  8. What's the reason for the c-section?  That would be a deciding factor, I believe.

ETA:  Macrosomia (too big) isn't a condition for which c-section is recommended, even by ACOG (american college of obstetricians and gynecologists), who are ridiculously c-section happy.

There is NO reason for you to have a c-section based on "too big".  Babies born by c-section are 3 times more likely to suffer respiratory distress.  They are far more likely to be born "too soon" and suffer because of that.

I urge you to reconsider a scheduled c-section in the absence on any other indicators.  I know a week or two seems like a long time at this point, but 2-3 months in the NICU would be much longer.

  9. How big is your baby? I delivered a nine pound, sideways little girl with no dialation at all. I'm not judgeing if this is a choice you are making, just don't let your doctor push you into anything for his convenice. I just know that it takes so much longer to heal from a c-section. Anyways they will make you wait till 39 1/2 weeks, if they think you are in no danger of going into labor on your own.

  10. Generally hospitals will do a c-section between 38 and 40 weeks. But the longer bub stays inside the better, gives them a bit more time to mature their lungs and gain more weight. Im having a c-section too (my first was a c-section) and they wanted to do it 38 weeks but I told them I wanted to wait until 40 weeks.

Seeing as your bub is sitting up high its not likely you'll go into labour before your due date so it might not be until next week when they do it.

  11. I had a c-section at 38w6d (1 day from being 39 weeks exactly). If you are having a scheduled c-section, most doctors will aim for somewhere around the 39 week mark. Best of luck to you and your new family! :o)
