You don't have to wait to take one after your period-there are new tests available that detect pregnancy 4 days before your expected period, that's what I used to figure out if I was pregnant this January. You can buy them pretty much everywhere.

You don't have to wait until afterwords, you can usually do it a week before if you get an early pregnancy test, fertiltyfriend.com says wait 7 days after your missed period for the most accurate results.  good luck!
