How long after sentencing does a person go to jail?

My boyfriend may be sentenced to serve a 30 day sentence on his next court date. I just wanted to know if they will take him to jail the same day immediately or do they giv a date to actually go to jail? If so, how long is the time in between?

It depends how crowded the jail is or if other arragements are made but you should count on him going that day

It depends on if he just signs a plea and gets sentenced at a later date.  If he is scheduled for an arraignment, he will probably go straight to jail.

He will most likely be given "pre-booking" and "surrender dates."  At the prebooking, he will provide his ID and court info and then be given the opportunity to apply for programs like Weekend Work (picking up garbage on freeways, etc) or other "jail alternative" programs, if the Court makes him eligible for them.  If he chooses to just get the 30 days over with (which in CA is 20 actual days), he can either surrender in Court that day or surrender at a later date and do straight time.  I would suggest that if he wants to surrender at a later date, or apply for the jail alternative programs, he tell his attorney or tell the judge directly before the Sentencing is completed.  When we sentence people, we usually give 6 to 8 weeks for them to surrender.

He is given a date to surrender unless the crime is serious then he is held until transferred.

Depends on if you get remanded to custody or given the self surrender option. Also depends on the jurisdiction.

In the Long Island, NY system, when I was tried for a DUI about 6 years ago, I was immediately taken into custody at sentencing and brought to jail later that day for my time.

At least that way you get it over with right away. Though being shackled in court can be frightening. You get used to it though.
