I am looking at new career moves, but my husband I really want to start trying for a family at the beginning of 2009. I am worried that might be too soon if I get a new job. So am I torn between more money or a baby.

  1. Well.... I started my new job in February and surprise... pregnant in March!

  2. Get the new job now and don't worry about the baby. When the time is right, it will happen. I was trying when I started the job I am at now and m/c in Sept before starting in October. I think it happend because it wasn't time. I am now pregnant again and will have been here a year in Oct and am only 7 weeks. Money is always best, so take care of that first - GL!

  3. if you get a new job, i would wait until the probationary period is over before you try. Check out FMLA, i think there may be some restrictions of like 6 months.. but i would say after 6 months at least you will be fine..

just remember.. you dont have to tell them the day your find out that your are pregnant.. just keep in mind if your new job offers short term disability you dont want to count yourself out of that either.

Plus, chances that you get pregnant the first month or two that you try is rather slim.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the baby is going to add a lot of costs for you financially. Now may be the best time to get ahead of those bills or beef up your savings in case you decide you dont want to work as much after the baby is born, or allow you and your husband a lot less stress about money, once the baby does come and you can enjoy yourselves!!

    Best of luck to you!

  4. Legally, they can't fire you even if you are pregnant when you get hired.  From a "warm & fuzzy" standpoint, I would try to be at the company for at least a year before your leave starts.  This is also when FMLA kicks in, which is very important.  Also depending on the company, you may not be eligible for short term disability until a year of employment.

  5. Hi

I had previous job experience. When I found that my pregnancy test is positive, the same day my boss anounced he is moving to another place and I should search for a job. So, when I was interviewed in 4 different places. I did not tell them about pregnancy as I still had to check with doctor. I was selected for all the four, then I told them that my pregnancy test is positive and I have to take maternity leave for 6 weeks after 8 months. 2 of the ladies and 1 male hesitated to offer me the position. One other person offered me as he needed somebody urgently. Now I am working and though this is not a good place as people are little cranky but I am surviving with my work experience and in need for maternity benefits.

I think it depends on your boss, your job experience etc.

  6. I would make sure that when you go for the job change, you stay in that position for at least 6 months to a year before having a baby in order to qualify for time off after having the baby.  All companies are different so I would make sure research their policies beforehand.  Also, changing careers can be slighlty stressful as well as having a baby.  You make want to think about how you will handle a new career and new baby all at the same time.  But, if you think you can handle it go for it.  And remember, babys cost money, so you may want to go for the higher paying job now in order to pay off some bills and save some money so you don't have to worry about the very large financial demands a baby brings to the family.  Good luck!

  7. You can get pregnant at any point in your career...but it is a good idea to try about 3 or 4 months after starting your new job just to be sure that you want to stay at that job.
