I was wondering if you need to let your gerbil get used to their cage for a few days first before you tame? Also is there any secrets anyone knows about taming?

  1. Cages aren't that big and your gerbil was bred in a cage, they don't need time to get used to a new cage. They will be stressed from the move sure, but you can start taming that very day or the very next day.

  2. When you first get him it is best to let him get used to his surroundings first. Then the next day when he is awake you may begin taming him.

  3. I would wait a day then start putting your hand in their cage and giving them treats from your hand. As they get more comfortable with you, start trying to pick them up and hold them. They won't like to be hold for long perios of time though because they are very active and would rather be running around and climbing on you and stuff.

  4. Ok, you should like hold him and stuff, make sure he knows your his buddy. Take about a week to do that, and then in that week he will also get used to his cage. When you start taming him do it slowly and go over one thing a few times before you start the next. Also, when he does somthing good give him a carrot or a piece of apple. :)

  5. You should let your gerbil get used to its new surroundings for a day before you start trying to handle it. The key to taming is patience. Don't rush into handling your gerbil. Just work on earning its trust before trying to hold your gerbil.

  6. Hi,

I am a gerbil breeder, and have been for several years.  I always let them get used to their surroundings for 24 hours, so they aren't really stressed when you hold them, or they might accociate you with stress.  Then, after that, hand feed them treats.  You can buy treats at your local pet store, or give them fresh vegetables (make sure they are ok for gerbils)..  Lay your hand down in their cage, for them to sniff/climb on.  After a while, they will get used to you, and learn to trust you, and you will be able to hold them.  Make sure you do not touch their stomach area when you hold them, it makes them very uncomfortable, as they have scent glands there.  If they bite, then make sure you where thick gloves whenever handling them, until they are fully tamed.

    Hope this helps!
