How long after you put a letter in a mailbox or take it to the post office is it postmarked?

if its picked up before 5pm at the post office it should have that days date but most likely if you drop it off after 5pm it will not be postmark in till the following day your best bet is to check with your post office some of them close earlier then some and some stay later then others we live in a small town and if its after 4pm the post office is closed they don't pick up the mail again in till 5am the next day
