Question:

How long are AAA assignments? My closer is being converted to a starter so they sent him to the minors

Brandon Morrow was a RP on the Mariners. He's being switched to a starter, and they've sent him to the minors to put in some work. How long does something like this usually take? I like him and would like to have him as a starter (on my fantasy team).

  1. Drop him, these assignments take about a month, maybe more if he need to build stamina, and when he gets back to the majors he is gonna stink for a while til he gets the hang of pitching for more than 3 outs.

  2. Brandon Morrows AAA assingnment will take maybe around 1 month becaause the point of the assingnment is to improve his stamina to be able to pitch 5,6,7 innings on 5 days of rest. Which will take like 4-5 starts to develop so I don't think you will get to see him in this year as a starter because the AAA season is about to end and the mariners aren't going to the playoffs so they just might shut him down and just have him do the assingnment till the AAA seasons comes to an end and wait till next year to see Morrow pitch as a starter. Maybe I'm wrong and he might just get 1 or to starts before the mariners season ends.

  3. I wouldn't know, but nice name though.

  4. usually, it could take one to two months, it depends on how the pitcher adapts to the change, it is usually 2-5 starts, and they see how much the pitcher has developed, and then decide where to go from there, so for now, I would just release him.

  5. My guess would be that he will stay at AAA for the rest of the year because you can only send someone back to the minors so many times before they are out of options so it would seem pointless to call him up for a couple starts at the end of the year

  6. I think Sunny's nailed it. The minor league season ends in 4 weeks ... how many starts would he get ... maybe 5? They may call him up in September, but I don't think he'd see significant time ..I'd suspect they'd try to stretch him out more in the Arizona Fall League.

One other clarification - I saw one poster referring to options and the number of times a player can be sent down. Every player who makes a major league 40 man roster has three option years at the beginning of his career. For those three years, that player can be sent down to the minors and recalled just as many times as permissible in the rules with no penalty. After those three years, a player on the 40 man can only be sent down if he clears waivers.
