  1. This is almost impossible to answer. Trail length varies so much from mountain to mountain. You also have to factor in that resorts LOVE to call 50' connectors "trails". Those lower the average length considerably because there are so many of them.

I've skied on trails that were 4 miles long, 2000' long, and 400' long all in the same day.

  2. More info please. This is the best I can give you.

    East Coast Slopes

They tend to have less summit to base distance land to put trails on.  Two thousand to three thousand feet of "vertical drop."  If that scientific data helps.

The longest trail may stretch three miles.  Slopes for many reasons are broken into lots of itty bitty inter and cross-connecting trails that average 500 yards.  I am not averaging the 50 yard cut threws into the mix.

Every Mountain has its own features that nature gave it.  The designers of the slopes have some say in the routes to be run.  Decent websites will give you the trails length and steepness.  Those guides are posted at the top of the trails as a safety precaution.

    West coast slopes

I can only speak about Colorado.  Trails are generally five times as long and three times as wide.  The trails can go for 10- 15 miles.  There is just more mountain to work with.  I guess the best way to say it is they are "fatter".
