I'm kind of scared of flying, but this is a one in a lifetime chance so I just want to know how long the flight(s) will be.

  1. Flights to Australia from the US depart from LAX or San Francisco.  The SF flights offer no advantage, unless you live in SF.

Texas to LAX depends on where you fly from in Texas, but you can figure three hours for that leg of the flight.

LAX to Brisbane is 12 hours

LAX to Cairnes direct is about 12 hours, but I am not certain they offer the direct flight anymore.   If you fly into Brisbane, expect a two hour layover minimum, and an additional 3 hour flight

LAX to Sydney is 12 and a half hours

LAX to Melbourne is 14 hours

All these flights face headwinds, and the times can vary by up to an hour.

You should allow AT LEAST 2 hours layover in LAX to change planes, and probably to go to a second terminal.

On the return trip, you will go through customs and immigration at LAX.  This process involves recovering your baggage, and in some cases, a complete repeat of the TSA screening.  You should allow AT LEAST 3 hours layover at LAX on the way back.

I returned from Brisbane last week, and it took us 3 hours and 15 minutes to get through the immigration portion of the process.  Missed our connecting flight, and spent 18 hours at LAX before they could get me on to my destination...

I no longer fly into Sydney, as their airport is a mess, ground transportation is a mess, and traffic is terrible.  Personally, I prefer Brissie and Melbourne as entry points into Australia.  The only way I will fly into Sydney is if someone is going to pick me up there, and all my friends have told me they would rather pick me up in Brissie or Melbourne...

I prefer Qantas to ANZ.  Avoid the layover in Auklund, unless you are a gluten for self abuse.  The layover generally is a couple hours, and you are not allowed to leave the airport.  It is a waste of time.  You may save a few dollars on this route, but it is not worth it...

Flying is a lot of fun.  Sitting in terminals can be tiresome and boring.  Enjoy your trip!
