  1. The actual track length is usually 1 mile. The most common race distances are 5/16, 3/8 and 7/16 mile courses.

  2. I-80 is 3000 miles long.  Oh, you mean the actual dogs.

    *never mind*

  3. Tracks in the U.S. are 1/4 mile, or 440 yards around, the same as your local high school track. The starting boxes are 110 yards from the finish line, so the standard race is 550 yards, or 5/16ths of a mile. The U.S. record is held by Be My Bubba at Bluffs Run in Council Bluffs, Iowa at 29.33. Sub-30 second trips are highly unusual and times around 31 seconds are typical. This is the distance most often run in the U.S.

A few tracks run odd lengths. At Palm Beach the circumference of the track is lightly smaller yielding 545 yards. At Southland, the circumference is slightly larger for 583 yards.

Most tracks have a second set of boxes located at the end of the back straight that are 220 yards from the finish line making a 660 yard, or 3/8ths mile race. A typical 660 yard race runs about 38 seconds.

Many tracks also have boxes at the beginning of the backstretch that are 330 yards away, so the races are 770 yards, or 7/16ths of a mile. Sometimes races are run from those boxes directly to the finish line for a 330 yard race.

  4. half mile, I believe
