When do student visas expire? If it varies, can you say some examples? After you graduate from school, then what? Can you stay in the United States and go get a job? Or do you have to leave as soon as you're done with school?

  1. 1.) A student visa is good til you completed your degree.

2.) You need find a company to sponsor u for a visa to work.

3.) if that don't happen you have to return to your country of origin because your student is expired now.

  2. According to your I-94, it would write D/S=Duration of Study.

It means as long as your SEVIS (I-20) is valid and current, your F1 is valid. 60 days prior to your completion of study, you can apply for Employment Authorization Document (EAD) based on your F1 Optional Practical Training (OPT).

It is given 1 year to work for US Employer.

If you don't file OPT or OPT is denied, you have 60 days of grace period upon graduation to leave US.

  3. The visa itself can be good anywhere between 3 months and 5 years, depending on the nationality of the student. However, authorized stay is different and is normally good for duration of status or until that person graduates or does OPT. The authorized stay can be extended if the student enrolls in another school, at a higher level normally. It's possible that a person could come into the US as a high school student and then go to college all the way up to a Phd program on one visa if they never leave after the visa expires. After school, that person would have to find some other status in order to remain legally.
