Question:

How long before my cats get along after being spayed?

My two female kittens (7 month old sisters) were spayed yesterday morning and I brought them home yesterday evening. Ever since I brought them home, one of them (Flower) has been hissing and growling at the other one (Scout). Flower disappears and does not want to be around Scout, but she is responsive and affectionate when I pet her. Scout wants to be around Flower but every time she approaches, Flower hisses at her -- one time she even swatted Scout with her paw.

These two kitties were best buds before the surgery. Is this only temporary or did the spaying make Flower anti-social?

  1. Some cats get very moody when they don't feel well.  This is not at all unusual.  Just like people, some want the comfort of their friends while others just want to be alone, and still others lash out.  As your kittens start feeling better, they will also get along better.  Meanwhile, just be sure they don't get into any real tangles that could open their incisions.

My best guess at a time frame for returning to normal is 36 to 72 hours after surgery, depending in part on whether your vet gave you pain meds for them.  Studies have shown that cats and dogs heal faster from surgery, and have fewer complications if they are given pain meds for at least a couple of days after surgery.

  2. Things should get back to normal in 12 -24 hours. If both cats are eating well and going to the box normally I would expect them - especially Flower - to begin feeling better soon. If they don't ( Flower in particular) I would speak to your vet about some pain control. Actually I might ask if there has been any given at all as I suspect that is Flowers problem. Either way I think 1 more day of rest and solitude ( if that is what she wants) will make all the difference to Flower.  Hope this helps.
