Question:

How long before paint dries on a car?

I just drove home a newly painted car. It has a clear-coat and car is black. I just noticed some yellowish dots on the door and some green, etc. I guessed its from driving and the road. Will they go away when I wash the car or was it that the car wasn't dry enough? Can I wash the car right away?

  1. Should only be a day or so to be dry to the touch.  It does take a month or so for it to cure all the way through.  Just make sure you use some new microfiber cloths to wash with and rinse the dust off of them often ti avoid lots of swirl marks.  Have to be very careful with soft unprotected paint.

  2. you should give it about 2 to 3 days 5 to be safe

  3. Car paints are not a SOLID color, All paint shops mix their paint to get the color you want based on the paint code you chose. The black paint you have may have a variety of colors mixed in with it the get the shade you requested, including yellow and green. If the paint was not fully mixed properly than these color tints may have been painted on your car unintentionaly, you should point it out to the paint shop you went to and get their opinion but if its still there after you wash it it should be repaired.

It could also be overspray from another project the shop had been working on.

  4. Wonder if the shop used a paint hardener, this is normally part of of good paint job, but can be extra. The shop should not had you took the vehicle until the paint was dry, and the vehicle is to be not washed for several days, and not using any soap, Now the vehicle is going to have to be color sanded when paint is completely dried. Best to call the paint shop right away before you touch the vehicle in any way.

  5. two days to a week to be able to drive. But it takes about a month for the bottom coats to dry so do not wash the car for about a month and DO NOT wax.
