luckily our "greed" is much more than offset  by the greed of the rest of the world creating a happy little balance.  And to make up for the greed of the other nations we constantly funnel massive amounts of aid in the form of food, medicine, money, clothing, and military support to much of the world.  Luckily for many of the nations in the world our consumerism is helping failing economies (not our own mind you) soar to new levels of development.  These once failing economies where food, clean water, and medical aid were once nonexistent; are now on there way to becoming super powers whose inhabitants are fast developing buying power themselves.  Thank God for the "greed" of the west that so helps to keep so many people fed and safe.  People such as yourself have listened to so much rhetoric for your entire life that you fail to see how generous we are, to a fault.  And why do we help so much of the world when there is no reward only hatred?  Because it is the right thing to do.  Because we are the kind of country that will take a sniper who just shot a medic and have the same medic treat the sniper for wounds.   Because we value human life, dignity, and freedom.  Because we are so much better than misled people such as yourself will ever be able to recognize because you are willing to believe the claims put forth by so many fools in this world.  So your better question would be how long until the ignorance of people such as yourself completely destroys the planet.  Because views such as yours will lead to an eventual destabilization of the world and outbreak or war and then; at the very least, the world as we know it will no longer exist.  Please take the time to educate yourself on the truth and use some common sense.

seems like that has been happening for decades. It is up to the source company to stop the exploitation of workers. The west does not need to cheap products. A lot of the products are c**p anyway. Most of the products are not necessities.

How long will the world last when a lot of the countries continue to have too many children. ( not much longer )

Global warming might be a telltale sign of Doomsday -- it will become unbearably hot, people will not care for anyone, and poor farmers (hunters/gatherers) will compete for the tallest buildings -- just look at the Arabs, they were poor farmers before oil discovery and now it's Burj Dubai and taller!

You also make a poor argument against sweatshops (Fairtrade for example only works well if an entire area is covered by it, otherwise, the "Fairtrade" farmers/workforce find their money way out of proportion to the others and the local economy is trashed).

The young of China is joining in my friend.  Some are profiting from those small wage earners and investing in cars, energy needy gadgets and so called "Fast food".  

Invent a cure that does not include being a conscientious peasant, having to give up enjoyable things and comfort.

You are right in your comment that greed destroys the planet, but wrong to think it is purely the West. I accept that the west has set a very bad example in the last century or two/three, and that people are extremely wasteful and out of harmony with nature across large parts of the world.

However, the current increasing demand for energy is predominantly in India and China, and consequently they will be polluting the atmosphere to a much greater degree, as they have huge populations.

The West needs to initiate any changes to worldwide envirnmental policies, as if the average US or British citizen thinks they need air con, two cars, and dozens of electrical gadgets to survive, and then advertises this lifestyle in the developing world, we are all doomed. How can we expect the average Chinese person not to want a Mercedes, an Ipod, a widescreen TV, and holidays abroad?

The small cuts agreed under Kyoto will not really make much difference, and there really needs to be some proper leadership and example setting by those in power in the wealthier and more developed nations.

The guy who draws a similarity between the River Kwai and your question must have no brain. Apart from the decades since the second world war, would he dispute that Germany is a developed western nation? They had Hitler, and Auschwitz, and the comparison is ridiculous and irrelevant.

The whole world needs to change, and those with the most wealth and power consequently have the most responsibility to start making the changes.

I am often sickened by the ignorance and apathy of the west, and the UK (where I live), as it seems that third world life is expendable, which goes against everything I believe in. Then these nations claim to have god on their side, or democracy, none of which is true. I refuse to be brain washed into believing that Britain is "Great", as I often feel ashamed at the level of ignorance and lack of humanity to be found here.

If Indians and Chinese made as much money as a factory worker in the US or Europe they would be rich.  It costs next to nothing to live there compared to the West.  We get more pay cause it costs more to live here.
