We are taking our little one to hawaii and we are obviously going to use water babies sunblock 50 when we go to the pool as well as hats, bathing suits etc...but I still wondered what the maximum exposure time would be. 30 min? 2 hours? How long can they actually be in the sun/pool with the sunblock on before getting over heated or even worse burned? I want to be careful but I tend to be too careful. I'd like to enjoy our time and not worry every second that he's getting too much sun so what's an appropriate amount of time in the sun?

  1. I would ask your doctor to be sure... that is the best bet, and then you can enjoy your time in the water with him, even if it is for only 30 min at a time. Have fun! =)

  2. It depends how strong the uva/uvb rays are. You can buy little strips that detect how strong the rays are. I think they are made by Huggies. I've never used them but I imagine they work great! I think you place them on their foreheads for a little bit.

    Have fun in Hawaii

  3. I agree with 30 minutes max, especially in the pool or ocean, it washes off even waterproof lotion.  They make body suits for babies that have complete sunblock protection built in, you should look into that.  Some even have hats too...

  4. About an hour i would say. But it might say on the bottle, but yes make sure to wear hats and sunscreen. I will have to warn you he will get a little burnt, nothing can stop that. So try to buy a sunburn cream that you put on the sunburn to help it feel better. But ofcourse he might not even get that burnt.

Have a wonderful time in Hawii.

  5. An infant that young should be kept out of direct sunlight even with SPF 50.  I wouldn't have the child outside for more than an hour at a time. Over heating is very dangerous make sure that the child is in the shade and cool.

  6. I always reapplied my son's sunblock every hour and a half to two hours. It just depends on water exposure and things like that.

  7. I wouldn't go over 30 minutes max!  The beach or pool sun is no place for a 6-month old.  Their skin is so sensitive.  You could set him up for cancer at a very early age!

  8. I would reapply sunblock every 30 minutes to just be safe because you guys are also going in the pool. You really don't want to take a risk, especially with a 6 month child. I've heard, you take the time it takes for you to become tan and time it by the number of your SPF. So it would normally take me about like 10 minutes in the sun to have a tan. And if I use an SPF of 50, I multiply 10 by 150. That gives me 1500 minutes. That's how long your sunblock will last before it wears off,

  9. You should minimize the time you baby is in the sun when the sun is the highest overhead (usually from about 10:00am-2:00pm).  Put sunscreen on about 20-30 min before going out and reapply every hour.  Wear wide brimmed hats, shades, even light/loose fiting shirts and pants to block the sun and remember that you can even burn through a t-shirt!  Blue is the best color for reflecting the sun and will work better than other colors.  Use an umbrella or small pop-up tent as a shelter from sun.

Enjoy your vacation, but take your baby for a break from the sun ever hour or so when the sun is high.  And make sure your little one is getting enough fluids so he/she doesn't get dehydrated in the heat.
