  1. if you are referring to back country then 2 nights in one spot and 14 days total.

    in established campgrounds -14 days

These are generic rules ,You may want to check the with  specific area you are planning to go to see if there are variations

  2. Yup. 14 Days is the usual rule of thumb when it comes to NF and BLM campground areas. 2 Days usually for backcountry areas. There are notable exceptions everywhere and in many cases you may need a permit, especially in Wilderness areas. Check the regs before you leave and contact the managing agency for the area you want to camp at if you have any questions.

  3. From the BLM website for New Mexico (but I'm pretty sure it applies to other states):

"There is a generally a 14-day camping limit for BLM’s developed campgrounds."

"Dispersed camping is generally allowed on public lands in New Mexico for no more than a period of 14 days within any period of 28 consecutive days. The 14-day limit may be reached either through a number of separate visits or through 14 days of continuous overnight occupation during the 28-day period. After this time period, you must relocate to another site at least 25 miles away. The purpose of this is to prevent damage to sensitive resources caused by continual use of any particular areas."
