  2. Wasps and ants seem to be able to be underwater for long periods of time. However, a factor that may rig the actual length is the fact that air bubbles cling on to the hairs of the ant. Sometimes air bubbles cling onto its spiricles too. When this happens, they can extend their scuba diving! I learned this when I put ants into those tornado tubes and had fun!

Some other factors may include the type of the ant and its size.

  3. Ants like all insects don't hold their breath underwater.  They breath through their skin which is coated with oil(surfactant).  when you submerge an ant or any other insect the surface tension of water forms a bubble around the insect.  How large the bubble is compared to the insect and how actively the insect works to get out will determine how long it will live.  The two weeks reported above is likely the longest it would survive.  If you add soap the the water the ant will die quickly because it breaks the surface tension.  You can also spray soapy water on an insect and it will suffocate.

  4. 19 days underwater, apparently.  In the QI Book of General Ignorance.
