How long can a debt collect a debt?

Back around early to mid 2002 I got a cell phone from Radio Shack with service through Sprint PCS. The service did not work in my area as the sales person said it would. Now, over sic years later, and with $4.00 / gallon gas, they want "their". I don't feel I owe them anything to begin with and I sure don't need to be thinking about this now. What can I / they do about it?

  1. Hi,

I used "Credit Solution" to settle my debt and avoid bankruptcy. They managed to reduce my debt up to 58%.It's legitimate.I came across this company on NBC News Special Edition.Check it out here:

  2. http://www.bankrate.com/brm/news/cc/2004...

this site contains state by state SOL for various types of debt.

  3. Check your states statute of limitations on how long they would have to take legal action in court on this debt.

Here is a link to find your states  SOL

    http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/SOL-...

If the debt is beyond your states SOL, then all they can do is ask for payment, they have no legal recourse and the debt will drop off your credit report anyways after 7 years.

If the debt is "time barred" then check this FTC web site for answers on what to do

    http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/aler...

    Information on time barred debts.

If the debt is NOT beyond your states SOL, then work out something with them or they may serve you a summons to appear in court to seek a judgment against you.

    Hope this answers your question
