  1. The lifespan of a average dolphin is probably about 20 years or less.  However they have lived as long as 48 years.  The age is estimated by examining a sliced section of a tooth and counting the layers.

As in any animal population, a variety of diseases and parasites can be responsible for dolphin deaths. Dolphins may suffer from viral, bacterial, and fungal infections. In addition, they may develop stomach ulcers, skin diseases, tumors, heart disease, urogenital disorders, and respiratory disorders. Parasites that typically affect dolphins include tapeworms, flukes, and roundworms.

  2. Smaller dolphin members usually have a shorter lifespan, but dolphins can live to be in their 50s. But, it's rather rare; they tend to live to their early 30s at most.

However, the largest dolphin member, the orca whale, can live up to their 70s. The oldest female, still alive today, is close to her 90s.

Dolphins have the ability to grow old, like modern humans, but unlike us, the ocean has them facing much more toxins and diseases, that affect their health, causing them to die earlier.

But if you look at dolphins in captivity, that is a whole other case as well. Only several have ever made it past their fourties, orcas included.
