How long can a green card holder stay out side of US?

I want to know if go oversea for about 3 mounth and return to US then do i have to wait 5 years and 3 months to apply for my green card? Or no i would apply in 5 years. Please help me thank you in advance

  1. Your question is a little confusing, If you are a green card holder 3 months or less will not affect your status just be prepared to document your absence.

    If you are not yet a permanent resident be very very careful consult an immigration attorney ( which I am not ) before traveling.


  2. You have to be a permanent resident for 5 years without leaving the United States for trips of 6 months or longer. And have a presence in the US of not less than 30 months. So you wait 5 years and 0 months before you are eligible in the case you just described.


  3. If you are already a green card holder, you can leave the US for 3 months and it shouldn't have any effect on your residency here when you apply for citizenship after 5 years.
