Question:

How long can a spirit remain trapped in a mirror?

Many, many moons ago, people would cover their mirrors when someone died in the house so that their spritis or souls would not be trapped in a mirror.

If they are trapped, how long do they remain there? Is breaking the mirror the only way to release the spirit or is there a more conventional way to do this?

  1. That is just superstition and I know of now ghost who were trapped in mirrors. That probably was believed at the same time some people believed that taking their picture would trap their soul.

  2. not sure but you just reminded me of that practice!! i recently saw a taiwanese 'unsolved mysteries' type show that featured a video tape of a live little girl in front of a 3-mirror vanity, and when she turned around, her reflection did not.  some asians don't have mirrors in the bedrooms for the reason that a soul (some believe you have 3) can become trapped.  i'm guessing it's temporary though.

yes it could've been fake, but it was incredibly creepy.

  3. I suspect this is both an early superstition from cultures introduced to mirrors from outside their culture and suddenly saw themselves magically and a distortion on Jewish tradition

"In traditional Jewish homes, mourners do not use cosmetics, shave or cut their hair, which are considered signs of vanity, an inappropriate emotion when the deceased body so soon has begun to decay. They do not wear leather, which was thought a luxury in ancient times, nor do they engage in sexual relations. Mirrors are removed, turned to the wall or covered with white sheets to prevent one from an act of vanity. Those "sitting Shiva" sit on low stools or the floor rather than chairs, as an expression of their grief." (link below)

Any honest skeptic will admit there is nothing more conventional than breaking a mirror (this uses known laws of physics). So, anything beyond this requires unconventional thinking outside of elementary school sciences.

I suspect that a mirror  is no different than a house, room, or other piece of furniture that spirits are said to attach themselves to (attached not trapped) and that any appropriate ritual (blessing, cleansing, etc.) would free/remove a spirit to go on IF it wished.

  4. As long as you believe it can be trapped.

You are the writer, it's your story.

    Now, that's power!

    Use it wisely.

  5. I don't know about the idea.  I think its not true, but  the idea comes from a time when people thought mirrors were magic.

  6. untill the mirror is broke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Remember

    If you break the mirror

    you'll get bad luck!

I would just wait till the trapped spirit is gone.

  8. Do you know what is 'spirit'? If human can trap or release spirit, why the dead remain dead? Only people not believing in God, believe so.

  9. well I have heard of spirits in a mirror, but I am not sure of the procedure to extract them. Since most spirits can move thru solid objects, i dont see any reason they would be trapped in the first place. they may show themselves in one. but I dont think you can trap one or one can be trapped in a mirror. This site has some info and instructions if you break one.

  11. Spirit can't get trapped in a mirror. But mirrors can be used as portals to the other side. I imagine people used to see the spirit of a dead person and assume they'd gotten trapped there, but it's just not true.
