  1. How long can you keep a close eye on it?  They won't dry out like frogs but they have to be watched very closely-they can be very fast and there is a lot that can harm them.  No animal (cat, dog, ect.) can be allowed near it.  There is also a high risk of salmonella getting passed onto all the surfaces the turtle comes in contact with.

Most of the books I've read say NOT to let turtles crawl around loose or even to take them out of their tanks at all.  They definitely don't need to for exercise-they get more than enough in the water.  Red eared sliders, matamatas, and softshells shouldn't be taken out of the water at all: the last two should only leave the water for vet visits or to lay eggs and RES (along with all other sliders and cooters) in addition for going to the vet's and laying eggs should only leave the water for basking.  These three groups are "completely" aquatic and their instincts tell them that they are in danger when they are out of the water.

The only other reason for keeping an aquatic turtle out of its tank would be for exposure to the sun outside...in which case they would still need to be in an enclosure AND watched as turtles can actually climb *really* well and get loose.  Make sure that any outdoor enclosure has shaded regions in case they start to overheat.

  2. A turtle can be out for an hour or so if you are letting him out for fun or exercise.  If you are letting him outside to get sunlight then he needs to be out for a long time almost half the day.  so if thats what your wanting to do then you are better off getting a uv lamp.

  3. well if they bask for 10  to 12 hrs...but they do take a dip now and then while they bask..

I would say no more than 8 to 10 hrs..they need the water to sustain themselves and thier shells..

I have had two Sliders for 36 yrs now plus a 8 yr old and a 5 yr old..

I have had them in a 150gal pond for about 6 yrs now..

and eat alot of fish...and greens
