How long can blood be stored before transfusion..?

do nt the rbcs have a life span of only 120 days..? do they die when stored ..?

  2. RBCs can be refrigerated to last quite a long time.

    If ADSOL is added, they have a shelf life of 42 days from the date of draw.  Otherwise, it is 21 days. They do not die when stored. The ADSOL is a "food" for them so they stay viable.

    If there are rare antigens, they can be deep frozen to last longer.
