How long can horses run?

When i practiced some horse riding abroad, the owners wouldn't allow me any more than a 3 minute sprint in the heat because apparently the horses are not capable/suffer damaging fatigue if they continue to run. Is this true?

  1. 3 minutes at 30 mph that's nearly 1.5 miles this looks sensible given the heat

  2. A horse in good shape can gallop for a mile or two before it needs to stop it can go much further at a canter about a couple miles. It all depens on how smooth the road their on is, the wieght of the rider, etc.
