How long can i stay in india with my tourist visa?

im going to india this july and i need to stay there for 3months..is it possible for me to stay that long, granting that i only have a tourist visa? i have browsed the indian embassy website here in our place but it is not much of help.

You can stay until they catch you... with 1 1/2 billion people to worry about... they will never notice you.

You can stay for 180 days maximum on a tourist visa. After this period you should exit the country. you can re enter after getting a fresh visa from Indian mission in any neighboring country

It seems like you just have to apply for a 3 months visa for india:

"Americans wishing to visit India are responsible for requesting the correct type of visa from the Indian Embassy or Consulate"

You can stay in India on tourist visa for the length of time on your visa.  You can request visa for 1mo up to 5yrs, paying the appropriate rate for the different length of says.  My daughter and I lived in Goa for a on a tourist visa.
