Question:

How long can they wait ???

My sisters waters broke yesterday and she was told she is in early labour ( 2cm dilated) but nothing more has happened.

She is being kept in hospital but has been told they may wait up to two weeks for delivering her baby (as she is 6 weeks early) and baby not due till 8th October.

Is that safe?

She feels fine and is getting no pain. Just waiting around for something to happen! She's on antibiotics to prevent infection and steroids to help baby's lungs which she has been told would be under-developed at this stage.

Has anyone else had a long wait between their waters breaking and delivery??

  1. No!  Once your water breaks the baby needs to be born within 24 hours to avoid infection.  6 weeks early isn't horrible, my son was born 5 weeks early without any steroid shots and was perfectly healthy.  If her water has broken, the baby needs to be delivered soon.

  2. No that's not unusual. My friend's labour was held off for another two weeks once her waters had broken. She was even sent home and rested in bed. The baby was born about the same - 6 weeks early. There could be the odd complication but neo-natal units are very advanced and I'm sure all will be fine. All the best :)

  3. As long as there is enough fluid left to support the baby, your sister will be fine.  If there is no fluid they will have to induce labour or your sister will have to have a c-section.  Whatever, the medical profession will do all they can to ensure the safety of both mother and baby.  Best wishes to all.
