I am going to go to Canada to visit friends for a holiday and was wondering how long I can stay for. My friends being from Canada wouldn't know. Also how much money would I need to have for the duration (to show I won't be a burden on the Canadian Government).

Thanks in advance,

Fly.

  1. I have friends in Canada and I stay for 6 months. That's the maximum time you're allowed. The immigration officer just asks what's the purpose of your visit and have you been here before. Then he stamps your passport and that's it.Hope this helps.

  2. The maximum stay for most persons is three months.  However, this also depends on the immigration officers that you meet.  If you have a return flight for a week or two, they will usually only stamp your passport for one month.  If you have no return flights booked, they may demand proof that you're intending to return home.

  3. You can stay 6 months unless the Customs officer determines and tells you other wise, but generally they don't.  Even at 6 months you can apply for an extension.

If you are American or British (or most other fully developed nations) if you look average with a wallet full of bank cards and credit cards you will not be asked about proving you have sufficient cash.  You are actually more likely asked the opposite - carrying over the amount you have to declare.  But the answer for customs purposes is sufficient money to take care of you during your trip.  And it sounds like you already have free accommodation so you need a lot less.

Here is a link that says visa holders can stay 6 months, then apply to extend your visa.  If you don't need a visa, it shouldn't be more strict than that.
