So I had an unexpected C section on tuesday, how long should it take for my milk to come in?? I never had one before and My milk always came in right away with my other kids, So im kinda worried about the baby not getting to nurse. He is a good sucker and he wants to nurse. But he will be in the hospital for a few more days and they are supplementing him along with my nursing. Should I be worried about my lack of milk?? Yes I am pumping but just wanted your imput.

  1. 4-7 days.  You'll know.  It's hard to miss. :)

  2. How are they supplementing him?  Is it with your pumped milk or with formula?  With a bottler or a supplementer?  I just ask because the first days of nursing are the most important.  Your milk will also come in faster if you have your baby to the breast frequently--it signals your body to start producing.  I believe it can take up to a week for milk to come in.

Try not to worry too much about it-you produce colostrum in the first days which is great for the baby.  Babies are also born with added fat stores for those days before the milk comes in.

My son was born early, early on a Wednesday (2:52 am) and my milk came in that Friday afternoon (trust me, you'll know when it happens!).

  3. i had an emergency c-section at 32 weeks with my first pregnancy and never had milk at all--- i don't think it had anything to do with the c-section, i just think i didn't produce any--- i'm currently 31 weeks pregnant and don't really expect to be able to breastfeed (i don't think that i will produce milk this time either, but who knows i might luck out!!)
