  1. Using what, if any, mode of transportation?  Horse, walking, wagon?

  2. At its widest point France is about 735 North to south. A common walking speed for a horse is 2-4 miles an hour but the rider must dismount and lead the horse every few hours to avoid over taxing it so figure that the average speed of a man on horseback who has no remounts and isn't willing to kill his horse is no more than 3 miles an hour when going a long distance. And. of course, the rider will need to sleep and both rider and horse need to eat and drink. So we can figure that the rider will travel no more than 12 hours a day or maybe 36-40 miles a day.
