What should i know before i could get a horse? What should you be able to do before you get a horse (Riding & education wise)?

i've been riding for about 5months now, and been having lessons for 1 1/2 months

i can rise to the trot, can jump small jumps properly and have started cantering. i can do horseback games like bounce pony, bending etc. I know basic horse care, rugging, can saddle, bridle and un-saddle, clip and can handle horses.

I've done research on how much it would cost and know how much feed, aggistment and worming is.

  1. Depends what sort of horse...

Sharing one owuld be good...or part leasing. Could you keep it at the riding school, that you will have your insructor around to help out. Or at a livery yard then there will be lots of people to help. I would say so long as you have lots of experienced people to help and a very calm placid horse it should go ok.

Somne people get there horses before they have started riding lessons and just learn on them!

    Good luck!

  2. NO WAY! Not yet! I'd say the MINIMUM for getting a horse is 2 years of lessons.

I have been riding for 5 years and have had lessons for 2 and a bit years and can do all that and can name each part of the horse, can do first aid, can gallop bare-back and heaps more and STILL don't have a horse.

What would you do if the horse got a cut on it? Or got very sick? Can you administer first aid?

Just think about that. I hope you will eventually get a horse, just not yet. :).

  4. Since you know the basic care of a horse i think you could get one as soon as you find the right one for you, start out with a horse you feel comfortable on, one thats been around the block. i think the best horse for you to start with would be an older (15-20) horse that has been used for youth lessons or 4-h, on that you can learn from. and keep taking lessons about one a week.

    hope this helps :]

    Also;

One thing to stay away from is a green horse for a green rider. years ago even after having a horse for two years i got a high strung apha gelding for my birthday. sure he was nice, fun and energetic but more then anything it was frustrating and scary. not knowing alot about young horses he soon picked up bad habits (bucking when asked to pick up the canter, would not stand still, disrespected my space and thought he was the leader)  because i was unconfident on how to deal with him.

those are the best words of advice i can give anyone who is looking to buy there first horse.

  5. I rode horses in Dressage for 7 years before I started owning horses (young warmbloods and anglo arabs). It really depends on your ability - and the type of horse you want.

Maybe ask your instructor if he/she thinks youre ready. Then ask him/her to help you find a suitable horse.

You could consider leasing a quiet horse so you can expreince the commitment required, also because you might lose interest. My advice is not to rush into buying a horse especially if youre a begginer.

Buying the wrong horse could also wreck youre confidence.

    Good Luck.

  6. No set rule on when you get a horse.  When you can afford it, or when your parents can afford it and if you have a place to keep it I would say.  You probably should know something about them, care and how to ride a little bit at least.

  7. it took me 11 years of lessons to get my own horse. and i am gald i had to wait such a long time. allthough after 1 year i was very confidient and could wall trot canter jump ect. the extra years gave me more balance, a better seat, more understanding of the horse and made me a much better rider.

i would wait way more than 5months before you get a horse. you need loads more practice to make it more comfortable for the horse, and with the practice you will get loads better

you also need to know a lot more than basic care. if you just know a small amount of care, it isnt fair on the horse. if something happened and you didnt know what it was then the horse would suffer.

  8. I had to wait 10 years for a horse and i am glad that i did. there is so much to learn and before i got my own i had done lessons (dressage, western) for a year, many many camps, many different trails, i rode other peoples horses and also rode arabians in endurance rides. To understand everything about caring for a horse its a good idea to do alot of everything! find out what you like best. For me. the lessons were a waste of time. its when you spend 3-4 hours in the real counrty.. experiencing slopes and hills and wild life that can spook the horse. otherwise when you get a horse you will expect it to act the same as your one in the ring did.

if i were you i would give it a year or 2 at least. plus ....

the longer you wait the more you will appreciate it ! I Promise!!

  9. im being lazy and ill explain at skool haha! we have someone lookign at buddy tomoz :O and if they fall threw we have 2 more people on the wkend

TAMARA good got ur attention :P

well i heard they were selling cheyeene and ebony at ag so u can buy my one of them lol :P

I dont know, i love everything especially omgosh chocolate hahahaha.

How g*y as soon as we get back to skool its ma b'day

  10. i dont think your ready

i have been riding for 2 years and am just allowed to start looking for a horse.,

1 thing we horse lubers dont think about is if u have fallen off.

I fell off for the first time when i was trailign a crazy horse.

if u think about it, if u fell off would u want to get back on

do u know how to handle a spooking horse??

and if u dont know how to canter how will u react if the horse takes off at a gallop

best to wait till a year or till your instructor thinks ur ready,

    gd luck.

    my fav saying

green rider+green horse= black and blue..

  11. If i were you i would try and find a old horse to buy. that way you dont have to worry about the horse going crazy. You should ride the horse during a lesson. that way you can learn to work with your horse and your horse will start to love you.
